In the much-loved essay ‘Is Nepal Small?’ written by the great poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota, there is a powerful line – ‘It is small but it has heaven, it is few but it has eyes, it has legs but it has the world itself! It is far away but the divine magic of distance!’
‘Why travel to Nepal?’ As Devkota said, we travel to see and experience the ‘divine magic of distance’ and ‘small but heaven’! In the concept of ‘heaven’, it is also said – ‘Heaven is myth, Nepal is real’, that is, ‘heaven is myth, Nepal is reality’.
From the Himalayas to the Terai, the entire geography of Nepal is a magnificent world of natural, cultural, geographical, and biological diversity. Everywhere there are different worlds living, each small town or village a different life, each river a sadhana, and each mountain an old memory. That is why there are many ‘locations’ in Nepal on the tourist list.
The outside world remembers Nepal for Mount Everest or Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. But Nepal is a living museum, from whose walls one can glimpse – diverse and different patterns of life, culture, relationship with nature, food, costumes, language, dialect...
Our destinations are certainly far away due to geographical difficulties, they cannot provide tourists with luxurious comfort or facilities, but the entire Nepali geography is such a university, where one can study life, associate with people living in different styles, observe the diversity of the country and life. Traveling is not just about reaching the destination, but also about experiencing the many experiences that come with reaching the destination.
Even amidst immense suffering, one should reach the small villages of the Himalayas, hills and Terai to see the happiness of people. One should go there to understand the life, culture, happiness and sorrow of people. Therefore, traveling is also a journey to understand oneself, to know the inner self.
In this issue of ‘Koseli’, we have tried to tell stories related to the life, nature and culture of 12 destinations from east to west. It is not meant to say that ‘these are the only places to travel’, but these representative destination stories should inspire us to travel elsewhere as well.
