Once upon a time, traditional 'terracotta' tiles were used in palaces, monasteries and homes. The use of such tiles can still be seen in palaces and monasteries influenced by Newari architecture. With the changing times, the types and forms of tiles are also changing. There is an increasing trend of using different tiles from the floor of the house, from the kitchen to the bathroom.

It can be seen that tiles of different designs and sizes are used in every house to make it look attractive. In modern times, tiles such as vitrified, ceramic and porcelain are being used. In Nepal's import-based tile market, now Kajaria Ramesh Tiles is producing ceramic and vitrified tiles domestically.

Ramesh Corp Nepal and India's leading tile manufacturer Kajaria Ceramics Limited signed an agreement in October 079. After the agreement, Kajaria Ramesh Tiles has started tile production in Nepal since last August. India's 'Kajaria' brand, which is popular even in Nepal, has been brought in by Ramesh Corp with foreign investment.

Director of Kajaria Ramesh Tiles, Himanshu Agarwal, said that the production of Kajaria tiles has been started in Nepal with the aim of providing international level products to the customers at home. He said that he decided to open a tile industry in the country at a time when the country's foreign exchange reserves were decreasing and imports were banned. "In 2079, the foreign exchange reserves in Nepal were decreasing, the government imposed a ban because too much money went out in imports," he said. We opened an industry to prevent that.'

The use of tiles is increasing because they are beautiful, attractive, durable, easy to maintain and clean. Agarwal said that since the demand for tiles in the country is increasing, they have made an agreement with Kazaria to open the industry. "There was an idea to produce one of the construction materials, we were seeing a good market for tiles," he said, "Kazaria brand also wanted to produce quality tiles locally using raw materials from the respective countries." After our thoughts agreed, we both opened the factory together and operated it.

He says that Kajaria and Ramesh Corp have 50/50 percent investment in the industry which was opened with a total investment of 4 billion. He said that after producing tiles in Nepal, the price of Kajaria brand tiles is 25 percent cheaper compared to imports. "After starting to produce tiles in Nepal, it is 22 to 25 percent cheaper than the imported ones," he said. It will become easier for those who want to build a house when it becomes cheaper.

He said that the industry that opened on 17 bigha in Bardghat of Nawalparasi has brought changes from the road infrastructure to the economy of that area. He said that when the Kajaria brand entered Nepal, the quality of India's No. 1 brand tile along with foreign investment, technology, and technical know-how also entered. "Kazaria is an international brand, it had its own quality and standards, it was made number 1 by years of hard work," he said, "When a brand enters Nepal, it all enters Nepal." International brand and quality tiles are being produced in Nepal. The industry has the capacity to produce 52 lakh square meters of tiles annually.

He says that the production of Kajaria tiles has been started with the aim of providing international level products locally to the customers. Agarwal said that because the tiles are prepared using the latest technology, they are highly durable, attractive design and environment friendly, so every consumer prefers them. "Our tiles production plant is the largest and most advanced in Nepal, so now we are moving towards becoming the number one tile brand in Nepal," he said.

Agarwal claims that Kajaria is challenging competing brands worldwide due to its innovative technology, superior design and affordable prices. In the same context, he said, he has invested in tile production in Nepal. Kajaria has manufactured and marketed glazed and heavy duty vitrified tiles in various sizes and designs. "We have provided different designs, sizes and textures according to the consumer's interest," he said. He said that after meeting the demand of the Nepali market, they will plan to export to the international market in the future. He said that quality tiles can be produced and exported to India using Nepal's raw materials.

"Tile is a heavy item, so the transportation cost is high," he said, "India's tile industries are only in Gujarat." Exporting tiles to some parts of India is cheaper than from Gujarat, that's why India is the market.''

'We have brought weather-based durable tiles, products of different shapes and textures and various varieties suitable for home and commercial purposes,' he said, 'we have produced the most designs of tiles in Nepal.' He said that the production process of Kajaria tiles is based on environment-friendly technology, which also saves water and energy. "Renewable materials are used in our tiles, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," he said, "It is a pollution-free industry." He said that after increasing the production capacity of the industry in the future, up to 1000 people can be directly employed. "There are skilled foreign workers in the industry, while 80 percent are locals," he said, "skills are being transferred from skilled manpower to unskilled manpower."

In parallel with tile production in Nepal, he said that skilled manpower is being produced in the ceramics sector. He said that although various types of clay, glazed and ink used in tile production are imported, Nepal's clay is also being researched. "We are looking for raw materials with quality as the first priority. Our experts have established a research laboratory in Nepal and are studying and researching mines in different parts of the country," he said. Kajaria tiles can be purchased from 50 showrooms in different cities of the country. "In the coming days, we will continue to expand the distribution network in all major cities and markets of Nepal," he said, "We have also planned to promote sales through online."

Other tiles produced with modern technology are also being prepared to be brought to the market. The company also plans to produce plank (looks like wood) tiles in the future. Prime Ceramics, Lumbini Ceramics, Nimato, Nepal Ceramics and 6 other industries are producing tiles. At the 10th Nepal Buildcon International Exhibition held at Bhrikutimandap last February, the industrialist said that till last year, 14 billion worth of tiles were imported from India, but this year it has become self-sufficient in tiles.
