Nikki, who started running from 'Dharan Run' 10 years ago, has won dozens of duathlon, trail race and cross country competitions in the country and abroad.
Indrakala Nemwang (Nikki) has been interested in sports since childhood. Born in Falgunand rural municipality-5 Kopche of Panchthar, Nikki's education was done in Dharan. While studying at Shiksha Niketan Mavi Dharan, Nikki liked to play football but there was no moving ground. And sports activities were also limited.
Meanwhile, a race competition was held in Dharan. 15-year-old Nikki also entered the competition named 'Dharan Run'. He got success in his first participation.
In the competition of 8 km distance, she surpassed more than 3,000 participants in the under-16 category and got the title and a prize of 5,000 rupees. "I joined the 'Dharan Run' only for my own health. After being the first, I felt like I had won the world," she said.
His journey of success that started 10 years ago with an 8 km marathon continues unabated. In the meantime, he has won dozens of competitions in the country and abroad. In 2019, she stood first in the High Altitude Tri Adventure held in Jomsom in running, cycling and rock climbing categories, beating 500 competitors.
Representing Nepal in the South Asian Duathlon organized in Pokhara in the same year, she succeeded in winning the first place four times in a row in various competitions including the bicycle race organized in Sikkim in 2021.
Before that, she was the first in the 40 km long bicycle race held in Pokhara in 2019, surpassing 100 competitors. In 2019, she finished fifth in the 50 km Asia-level trail race held in Kunming, China, out of 500 competitors.
Due to the Corona epidemic, participation in the competitions was stopped, but the practice did not continue. In 2021, she participated in the 50 km long Bhojpur Trailer Race competition and secured the first place, in 2023, she won the first place in the 50 km cross country race held in Pokhara and in the Asian Championship held in Pokhara in 2023, she won the gold medal in the duathlon category in the 9th national sports competition held in Pokhara. .
In addition to these, Nikki has secured the first place in dozens of competitions including Sindhupalchok Trail Race of 60 km distance, Ekta Divas 40 km race held in Sikkim, India, MTB bicycle race held in Sikkim. She has also participated in the laser run held in Korea.
At that time, Nikki, who participated from the Nepal Army team, is preparing to participate in the 10th National Sports Competition to be held in February from Koshi Province. "At first there were many challenges, I was not able to wear shoes with good gears, although my passion for sports was unwavering," she says, "During my student days, I dreamed of becoming an army, after I started running, I felt that there was a future in sports as well. I continued this, gradually moving towards sports training. There is a plan.'
She said that although there are some risks while running in long-distance competitions, if you are mentally refreshed, winning the title will not be difficult. "Often it is up to the top four who get the prize in the competition, if you fail once/twice and stop participating in the competition, you will never succeed," he suggested to the newcomers of the sports genre. It is her experience that even though there is no discrimination because of being a woman, she has to face security challenges when going to participate in big competitions organized not only outside but also inside the country. He complained that the athletes of the district could not be supported because the athletics association was not active in Panchthar.
Now his main goal is to win a place in the 10th National Games. There have also been offers to play from departmental clubs. Nepal Army, Armed Police and Nepal Police are offering to play in the 10th National Games. However, this time, the goal is to participate and win a medal from Koshi province,” she said.
