Continuing his old friendship and collaboration with Balen Shah, Asif Shah has brought new energy and artistic voices to politics.
What you should know
Asif Shah's public identity was as a television presenter, singer, and artist. This same Asif has now embarked on a political journey.
Shah's name has been ranked first in the Muslim male cluster in the list of proportional candidates submitted by the National Independent Party (NISP) to the Election Commission.
Asif says that he felt the need to enter politics when Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah took a step towards parliamentary politics. Asif, who played an active role in Balen's journey from helping him become mayor to reaching an understanding with Ravi Lamichhane and Kulman Ghising, is considered one of the drivers of Balen's journey to this point.
'I was with Mayor Sap even after he had made up his mind to enter parliamentary politics. At that time, there was no blueprint for joining the NISP or how to do it. When the issue of joining the NISP arose, we held talks between the two of us as facilitators,' Asif said, 'Later Kulman sir also joined. After that, a tri-power was formed.'
Asif admits that his name was recommended for the proportional list because of the mayor. 'From that time on, we were like charioteers walking together. Because we walked together, he said, 'I will need you later too.' After mutual consultation on the issue of proportional representation, my name was approved and sent,' Asif said.
Asif understands that the youth's perspective on politics has changed after the Gen-G movement. He says that he entered politics because he thought that positive work could be done in the current situation where the youth's attraction towards politics is increasing.
Since RSP leader Asim Shah and Asif are brothers, it was easy for him to understand politics. Asif says that like Asim, he also wants to raise various issues in the art sector after reaching the government. He says that he will also play a role in finding solutions to the problems of the Muslim community. Although the issues of art and the Muslim community are ancillary, he makes it clear that the main priority will be the development of the country.
'We want a corruption-free society, not only the end of middlemen, but also the end of all negative forces. Now the whole country is looking at this team to take the country forward. Being associated with such a team has increased my energy a hundredfold,' Asif said.
Asif, who is also the host of 'The Voice of Nepal', wants to take art and politics forward together. Asif and Balen have a long-standing relationship. Asif was also associated with the rap band 'The Unity', which brought them both together in the same field. Not only that, Asif and Asim's 'G-21 Digital' has been continuously producing songs and music. Asif had supported Balen ever since he announced his candidacy for mayor and had also sought votes for Balen in his community.
Asif claims that when Balen became mayor, he received almost 100 percent of the votes from the Muslim community in Kathmandu. 'Almost all the Muslims in Kathmandu voted for him to win the mayorship,' he says.
After winning the Balen mayoral election, Asif had said, “Victory is not the only success, this is where the test begins.” Asif says that the work done by the mayor and his skills in managing the group inspired him to work in his team.
‘When you go to war, you call it a ‘battle test,’ and Mayor Sap prepared for it in the metropolitan city. He proved his skills there—he has practiced how to manage the group, mobilize it, and solve problems when they arise,” he said. “In the current situation, there are few people as skilled as him in the new generation. Since we have been together on this journey from the beginning, my desire is to walk together on this journey as well. If I can do something for the country, my own community, and the art sector by walking together, my life will be successful.”
Asif, who is also the host of ‘The Voice of Nepal,’ wants to move art and politics forward together. His main mantra is not to make politics a profession. He believes that along with politics, a person should also be active in their profession.
Asif's production company 'G-21' had earlier produced the film '2 Rupees', in which Asif acted under the direction of Nischal Basnet. The film 'Jante Bakhro' starring Asif was released last Jestha. He has also acted in many songs.
