On this day (June 16) in 1963, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereskova reached space. Born on March 6, 1936, Tereskova is the first woman in space.
Tereskova, who reached space through the Vostok-6 spacecraft, circled the earth's orbit 48 times before returning to earth. It took him 71 hours for that.
After returning from space travel, he was declared a 'Hero of the Soviet Union'. In addition, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Peace by the United Nations. Before joining space travel, Tereskova was an employee of a clothing company.
After returning from space, she joined active politics from the United Russia Party. In 2008, she became the deputy speaker of the parliament of the Russian province of Yaroslavl. Three years later, Tereskova became a Russian MP. She has also been honored with the 'Order of Lenin' award twice.
