India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru died on this day (May 27) in 1964. Born in 1889 in Prayagraj, India, Nehru died at the age of 74 in the capital New Delhi.

Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India after its independence from the British colony in 1947. He became India's first popularly elected Prime Minister on 13 May 1952 in post-independence elections. The first general election was held in India as per the constitution issued on November 26, 1949. 

The Indian National Congress (INC) won the majority in the elections held from 25 October 1951 to 21 February 1952. In the elections for 489 Lok Sabha seats, INC won 364 seats. The opposition Communist Party of India won 16 seats and the Socialist Party won 12 seats.
