On this day (May 21) in 1991, former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. He was killed in a bomb blast at an election rally in Tamil Nadu. In the attack, 13 people died on the spot, including Rajiv and the attacker Dhanu, while 45 people were seriously injured.
Born on August 20, 1944 in Mumbai, India, Rajiv was the Prime Minister of India from October 31, 1984 to December 2, 1989. Rajiv sent a peacekeeping force to Sri Lanka when he was Prime Minister. In response, Sri Lankan separatist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) killed Rajiv.
Rajeev won the Lok Sabha seat from Amethi in 1981 with a landslide victory. On October 31, 1984, Rajiv became the Prime Minister of India after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two Sikh bodyguards. But after the defeat of the Congress party in the general elections of 1989, he joined the opposition.
Congress was defeated due to Bofors case, Sikh riots, Bhopal gas incident, Sri Lanka policy etc. He was killed in an election rally in Sriperumbadur, Tamil Nadu after the election was announced in 1991. Dhanu (Tenmoji Rajaratnam) detonates an explosive device strapped to Rajiv's waist as he stoops down to touch Rajiv's feet with a flower necklace.
