Nicolas Maduro was elected President of Venezuela on this day (May 20) in 2018. He was elected for a second term in an election boycotted by opposition parties.
Born on November 23, 1962, Maduro became a member of the National Constituent Assembly in 1999. Maduro, who was re-elected to parliament in 2005, also served as Venezuela's foreign minister in 2006. He became the Vice President of Venezuela in 2012.
Maduro was elected interim president in April 2013 in a special election following the death of President Hugo Chavez in 2013. Maduro, who ruled the country for the remainder of his presidential term, was re-elected in the presidential election that followed. He assumed office on January 10, 2019 for a second term.
