In front of 80,000 spectators at the AZTE Stadium, Mexico's Julian Quinonez became the first player to score a goal at the 2026 World Cup. He gave Mexico the lead in the ninth minute. Mexico took advantage of a pass from South African goalkeeper Ronwayn Williams that the defender lost control of and Quinonez slotted the ball under the feet of the South African goalkeeper after a pass from Eric Lira. A large crowd of fans came to the stadium to support Mexico, which is hosting the World Cup alongside the United States and Canada.
