Mexico secured a comfortable 2-0 win over South Africa. In front of 80,000 fans at the Azteca Stadium, Mexico's Julian Quinonez became the first player to score at the 2026 World Cup. He gave Mexico the lead in the ninth minute. 35-year-old Raul Jimenez scored the second goal for Mexico. He headed in Roberto Alvarado's excellent cross in the 67th minute.

Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane  were sent off, leaving South Africa with nine men.

Mexico's Julian Quinonez became the first player to score at the 2026 World Cup. He scored in the ninth minute of the opening match against South Africa on Thursday night.

Mexico took advantage of a clearance from South African goalkeeper Ronwayn Williams, who slotted the ball under the feet of the South African goalkeeper after a pass from Eric Lira.

A large crowd of fans came to the stadium to support Mexico, who are hosting the World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, on their home turf.

The grand opening ceremony of the football tournament 'FIFA World Cup 2026' has been completed at the Estadio Azteca stadium in Mexico. With the official start of this World Cup, jointly organized by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the attention of football fans around the world is now focused on Mexico.
