Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya was born on this day (June 30) in 1969. Sri Lanka's all-time great cricketer Jayasuriya is known for his explosive batting. Jayasuriya's all-round performance was instrumental in helping Sri Lanka win the 1996 Cricket World Cup.
Jayasuriya was the 'Man of the Series' in the tournament. He retired from Test cricket in 2007 and from limited overs cricket in 2011. After that he played in twenty-twenty leagues.
In his active playing career, he has scored 6 thousand 973 runs in Test cricket and 13 thousand 430 runs in ODIs. Not only that, he has taken 98 wickets in Tests and 323 wickets in ODIs.
After retiring from sports life, he remained active in politics for a few years. He was elected from his home district Matara in the 2010 parliamentary elections. Later he also became an assistant minister. Currently, he is a 'consultant' of Sri Lanka's national cricket team.
