Pavitra Bishwakarma (Bik) of Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City-2, who has been fighting against caste discrimination for two decades, has been elected as a member of the House of Representatives through proportional representation by the Nepali Congress. She received the certificate of being elected as a member of the House of Representatives through proportional representation on Thursday.
She is the only one who has had the good fortune to become a member of the House of Representatives through proportional representation in Makawanpur, which has two constituencies. Born on 5 Jestha 2034 in the then Haluwar VDC-1 of Dang, Pavitra was married off at the age of 14 while she was studying in the 8th grade.
She continued her studies after marriage. She has a master's degree in sociology. After marriage, the Bik couple went to Kathmandu in 2048 BS and returned to Hetauda a year later.
She currently resides permanently in Hetauda. Pavitra, who has been active in the Dalit Women's Association (FEDO) since 2058, became the president of FEDO Makawanpur in 2061.
She became a Dalit women activist against caste discrimination and by bandaging the wounds of Dalit women. BK, who also held the responsibility of the president of FEDO Bagmati Province, also has the experience of becoming the president of the Inclusive Women's Network Sankalp.
After 2061, Pavitra, who has held the responsibility of the treasurer of Nepal Mahila Sangh Makawanpur, a sister organization of the Nepali Congress, has also become a central member of the Nepal Dalit Sangh. She was elected as a member of the Mahasamiti of the 14th General Convention of the Nepali Congress. BK had previously become a candidate for proportional representation in the 2074 elections. The 48-year-old BK did not get the opportunity to become a member of the House of Representatives at that time.
She said that she was elected as an MP from the Dalit cluster and that is why she thought of raising the voices of those who were suppressed. She said that she would take more proactive steps to end caste discrimination not only in the legal system but also in practice.
Recalling the past pain of child marriage, she said, "Child marriage is still prevalent in our society. It is more prevalent among Dalit and indigenous communities. I will do my best to reduce it."
