KP Khanal made a name for himself as a 'young activist' at the tender age of 17. At one time, he used to walk the streets of Kathmandu carrying a broom saying, 'I will change, my country will change'. Carrying a broom in his hand and patriotism in his heart, Khanal mobilized hundreds of youth for social work. He was involved in many social services, not only in the capital but also in Budhiganga in remote Bajura.
Khanal, who has been involved in social work since his adolescence with the urge to do something for the country, has now been given more responsibility. With the determination to rise above the cleanliness campaign and clean the state machinery, he had filed his candidacy for the House of Representatives member election on Falgun 21 from the Nepali Congress Party (RSP). The citizens of Kailali-2 supported Khanal, who is often seen in social work, by voting to fulfill his promise.
He won this election by a margin of 7,108 votes. While Khanal received 19,057 votes, his nearest rival, Patiram Chaudhary of Nagarik Unmukti Nepal, was limited to 11,949 votes. UML's Surya Bahadur Thapa came third in this area with 7,886 votes. Nepali Congress's Vijay Bahadur Swar, who was considered a contender for victory, received only 7,213 votes. Nepali Communist Party's Nanda Bahadur Saud got 4,369 votes.
Khanal, who was born in the remote Ramaroshan of Achham in 2056 BS, went to work in neighboring India as a laborer at a young age. Khanal, who returned from India and started his studies, also became a radio operator while studying in the 7th grade. Khanal, who entered Kathmandu during his Plus Two studies, started the 'Clean Kasthamandap' campaign after seeing the garbage heaps in the country's capital Kathmandu. Since then, he had become known as a 'young activist'.
Khanal, who was selflessly involved in social work, became the recipient of prestigious honors like 'National Youth Icon' and 'Janaseva Shree'.
Khanal chose the path of politics after realizing that sustainable transformation of society is not possible through social work alone. While addressing a meeting in Dhangadhi during the election campaign, Khanal had said, 'Now the youth of the Far West will not take a broom and clean the roads of India and the Gulf, but will change the country's policy with the pen of change.' The people have made him travel to parliament to fulfill that feeling and desire.
Khanal, who is seen as a clean image and youthful enthusiasm, had great support from the local youth and voters of Lamkichuha Municipality. His inspiring background also attracted ordinary people. However, the lack of political heritage and regional equations were somewhat unfavorable for him. But the slogans he carried of ending corruption and good governance were believed by the people of Kailali-2. This is Khanal's first parliamentary trip, having studied up to the bachelor's level. He went door to door with concrete issues of social, economic and educational development of his area. His future work style will tell how he fulfills the promises he made to the people and voters.
