UML and NCP to contest elections without alliance

The UML and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) have given priority to young and new faces in the candidacies under the direct system under the House of Representatives elections. There are 55 new faces from the UML, which has filed candidacies in all 165 constituencies. There are 59 new-face candidates from the NCP, which has registered nominations in 164 constituencies.

UML and NCP have also fielded Gen-G candidates. Gen-G Rima Kumari Yadav from UML has filed her candidacy in Parsa-2 and Gen-G Ajay Kushwaha from NCP has filed her candidacy in Bara-4.

UML says that 25 youths have been fielded in the election contest on behalf of the party. UML Publicity Department Chief Min Bahadur Shahi claimed that the number of new and young candidates is 54.54 percent. NCP leader Barshaman Pun claimed that about 60 percent of his party's candidates are new and young. 'We have selected candidates by giving priority to new and old,' he said.

Although there is a demand for 33 percent representation of women in the candidacy registration in UML and NCP, UML has fielded only 9 and NCP 8 women in the direct election contest.

UML has denied tickets to leader Surendra Pandey, Deputy General Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, leaders Binda Pandey, Gokul Baskota and Rachana Khadka, who competed against the KP Sharma Oli panel in the 11th general convention held last November. Surendra was the general secretary, Binda was the vice president, and Baskota and Khadka were the secretary.

Leader Thakur Gaire, who competed for the secretary position in the general convention, was initially not given a ticket. He was sent to the previously elected vice president in Palpa-2, Bishnu Poudel. But after Poudel returned to Rupandehi-3, Gaire got a ticket. Bishnu Rijal, who was recommended as number one from Dailekh by adopting the voting process, also did not get a ticket. The establishment in UML is being criticized for being unfair to other parties in the direct and proportional selection of candidates.

UML President KP Sharma Oli Jhapa-5, Vice Presidents Prithvi Subba Gurung Lamjung and Gokarna Bista Gulmi-2, General Secretary Shankar Pokharel Dang-2, Deputy General Secretary Lekhraj Bhatta Kailali-4, Secretaries Raghubir Mahaseth Dhanusha-4, Bhanubhakta Dhakal Tehrathum, Mahesh Basnet Bhaktapur-2, Rajan Bhattarai Kathmandu-4 and Sherdhan Rai Bhojpur are competing.

Nepali Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal has become a candidate from Rukum East. After registering his candidacy, he said, "This may be my last direct election starting from Rolpa and ending in Rukum. This has become a record in itself." Starting from Rolpa, established as a central base area, and coming to Rukum, established as a central base area, to file my candidacy has become a matter of pride for me.' Dahal was a candidate in the 2079 elections from Gorkha-2, 2074 from Chitwan-3, 2070 from Kathmandu-10 and Siraha-3, and 2064 from Rolpa-2 and Kathmandu-10.

This time, there are two other candidates from Coordinator Dahal's family. Daughter Renu Dahal has registered his nomination from Chitwan-3 and daughter-in-law Bina Magar has registered his nomination from Kanchanpur-1. Former secretariat member Devendra Poudel is a candidate from Nawalparasi West-2, while his wife Balawati Sharma is number one in the women's 'cluster' on the proportional representation side. Kalpana Sharma, the daughter of another former office-bearer Dinanath Sharma, has filed her candidacy from Kathmandu-5.

NCP co-coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal is a candidate from Rautahat-1. He won from the same constituency in the 2079 elections. NCP leaders Narayan Kaji Shrestha are candidates for Sarlahi-3, Barshaman Pun for Rolpa, Shakti Basnet for Jajarkot, Girirajmani Pokharel for Mahottari-1, Matrika Prasad Yadav for Dhanusha-1, and Bhim Bahadur Rawal for Achham-2.

Senior NCP leader Bamdev Gautam has been stopped at the last minute and Bishnu Prasad Tharu has been given a ticket for Bardiya-1. Leader Jhalanath Khanal, who had wanted to be a candidate, also did not get a ticket.
