If the party split through a special general convention, there would be no provision for it in the constitution: Leader Thani

What you should know

Leader Hridayram Thani has said that the special general convention of the Nepali Congress will not lead to a split in the party. Thani believes that the special general convention should be concluded through consensus or a process as it is mandatory according to the party's statute.

The Congress General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma faction have called a special general convention in Kathmandu on Poush 10 and 11. While the establishment faction is accusing the special general convention of dividing the party, Thani, who is also a former MP, said that the work as per the provisions of the statute will not lead to division. 'I am not in favor of the special general convention dividing the party. If the party had divided during the special general convention, the provision of the special general convention would not have been in our statute,' Thani said.

Thani says that the provision of the special general convention should be used correctly. He said that the leaders leading the party should take the right decision in the current situation. Thani mentioned that the statute has made a mandatory provision to call a special general convention if more than 40 percent of the general convention delegates call for it. He said that legal professionals and Congress leaders, cadres and well-wishers are also saying that the special general convention is mandatory.

Thani says that the result of not holding a regular general convention and the establishment side's deception has led to the need for a special general convention. 'When 54 percent of the general convention delegates have already called a special general convention, we should find a solution and take the party to the elections,' Thani said. 'My request is that we should formulate and discuss how to go to the elections, what our party's future programs are, and then move towards that.'

Leader Thani recalled that a special general convention was called even when Krishna Prasad Bhattarai was the party president. Leader Thani suggested that current president Sher Bahadur Deuba and acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka should also attend the special general convention and find a solution to the problem.
