There has been a dispute in Bajhang over the selection of UML general convention representatives. After failing to reach a unanimous selection, the two parties have published two different lists claiming to be general convention representatives.

Immediately after one faction of UML published a notice that 11 people including District Chairman Dil Bahadur Bhandari, Constituent Assembly member Lal Bahadur Rawal, and Provincial Assembly member Daman Bhandari were elected as general convention representatives, another faction made public a list including Thalara Rural Municipality Chairman Prakash Rokaya and former Kedarsyu Rural Municipality Vice-Chairman Nisha Dhami.

The first list published on UML letterhead bears the signature of Chief Election Officer Rajendra Prasad Joshi, while the other one is also signed by him without the letterhead. A separate list has also been published with the signatures of UML central member and Bajhang district in-charge Bhairav Bahadur Singh, central members Afilal Okheda and Asha BK, including the names of those included in the second list.

‘Instead of trying to make a single list by combining all the regions, geography, sentiments and psychology, two lists were recommended,’ said central member Afilal Okheda. ‘We have also made another recommendation after the list was drawn up arbitrarily without carrying out the election process and without returning the candidacies.’ He claimed that the list recommended by his group also included the recommendation of Chief Election Officer Rajendra Prashad Joshi. ‘Now the state and the center will decide the issue here,’ he said.

The factionalism between central members Ain Mahar and Bhairav Bahadur Singh, which was seen immediately after the 2079 BS House of Representatives elections, is becoming tighter in Bajhang UML. District President Dil Bahadur Bhandari of the Mahar faction said that since the election committee completed the entire process and selected the representatives, that list will be official.

‘With everyone’s consent, the election committee has been given the responsibility of completing the process and selecting the representatives. The list that came accordingly has also been approved and sent by the district committee and secretariat meeting,' he said, 'After all the decisions have been made, another list has come. I don't know what they are thinking.' He said he was not aware that the election committee had recommended both lists. He claimed that the representatives were selected with the consent of all the central committee members, district in-charges, etc.
