Lumbini Province MP Ramji Prasad Ghimire has been defeated in the selection of delegates for the 11th Central General Convention of the UML held in Arghakhanchi.
Ghimire is considered close to UML Vice-Chairman Bishnu Poudel. Ghimire's disagreement with Lumbini Province Chief Minister and UML central member Chet Narayan Acharya has increased in recent times.
All 15 people elected unanimously from Arghakhanchi are supporters of the Acharya group. Acharya is close to KP Sharma Oli. Ghimire, who is also the chairman of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly Physical Infrastructure Development Committee, was defeated by getting 1,207 votes. Prem Narayan Gaire, Shree Krishna Bhusal and Shitganga Municipality Deputy Chief Geeta Bhat Chhetri were also defeated in the open category from his group. Ghimire, who was elected twice from Province Assembly-2, is a member of the UML Lumbini Secretariat.
Pitambar Bhusal won in the open category by getting the highest number of votes. He got 3,187 votes. Shambhu Prasad Pokharel won the election from the establishment side with 2,743 votes, Basanta Kumar Shrestha with 2,841 votes, Resham Thapa with 2,770 votes, Tej Prasad Khanal with 2,533 votes, and Kamal Prasad Ghimire with 2,444 votes. Nine candidates contested the 6 open representatives.
Sushma Shrestha, Deepa Acharya, Bishnumaya Acharya, and Laxmi Gautam won the open women's election. Despite discussions to ensure a consensus among all the representatives, the election was held on Saturday as the matter could not be resolved.
Earlier, Toj Bahadur Rayamajhi from the 40-year-old category, Lil Bahadur BK, and Asha Pariyar from the Dalit category were elected unopposed. They are from the establishment side.
