Manifesto should not be just an election strategy

What you should know

A political party is a group of people committed to a common political ideology, philosophy, and program. Political parties established under the law receive the support of the citizens of that country.

If a majority is won through elections, the people give political parties the opportunity to take over the reins of governance of the country. Candidates of political parties and independent candidates participating in the elections must mandatorily publish their election manifestos.

The strong and capable side of democracy is elections and adult suffrage. While electing their representatives, the people should be able to get information on topics such as why should they elect a particular candidate? What is his election agenda? What will be the role of the representative after being elected?

As the election date approaches, various political parties seem busy writing their election manifestos. Some candidates have already presented their election manifestos to the general voters. The election manifesto is the formal document in which a political party clearly presents its philosophy, objectives, thoughts, policy programs, and commitments to the voters.

The course of action that it wants to determine for the country is clear from the manifestos issued by political parties. Do the manifestos issued by political parties in democratic countries contain policies, programs, objectives, and commitments that represent the voters and the general public? Are such commitments just and implementable? What is its impact on the national, international, social, economic, political, legal and multidimensional areas of society? Voters should give their valuable votes to the candidates after a comparative study of various issues.

But ironically, the election results to date show that political parties and our representatives have used the letter in the election declaration as a weapon to complete the formalities prescribed by the Election Commission and win the election. The election manifesto is not just a storehouse of words written on a piece of paper by an expert for a political party after taking his remuneration, it is also a commitment made to the people by the political party and its representatives while asking for votes from the voters. It is also the moral responsibility of the representatives to follow it.

The Nepali people are patient and patient. Sometimes we are given assurances and confusion in the name of new and sometimes old political parties. The people's restraint, patience and deception have broken the barrier and there have been movements and changes in various periods. The forces that emerged from the movement have also adopted the old style and are repeatedly ruling by deceiving the citizens.

As poet Gopal Prasad Rimal said, a day comes once in an era, and 21 Falgun is one such day. If the people exercise their voting rights wisely on that day, it will write the golden history of Nepal and decide the future fate and future of the people.

It is time for the people to introspect. It is time to question whether political parties see the problems of the people from the government or not. It is time to review the justification, objectives and commitments of the manifestos issued by political parties.

Even after 10 years since the promulgation of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly, the rights of citizens granted by the Constitution have not been implemented. While the international community is making significant progress in the field of science and technology, the lives of the people of Karnali, Sudurpaschim and Madhesh provinces are relatively difficult today.

Even though Nepal is an agricultural country, the import of food items is increasing every year. Even though the potential of water resources and hydropower is immense, we have not been able to benefit from it. This situation of the common people is due to the lack of a guardian role played by the leadership and the state.

The people's trust in political parties has weakened. Now it is time for political parties to think ruthlessly, focusing on national interests rather than personal interests. Geopolitical influence in a country like ours is not new, but there needs to be unanimity in the manifestos of all political parties regarding national interests and international policies. There needs to be unanimity on good governance, corruption, rule of law, independent and impartial judiciary, economic growth, and implementation of the rights of citizens as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The upcoming elections are providing a golden opportunity not only for us voters but also for political parties. It is time for voters and political parties to introspect on the shortcomings of the past and think once again about the multifaceted areas of national unity, national interests, sustainable peace, and development.

Although Nepal has not been colonized by any country since its history, political parties and their leaderships have not been able to give the general public a sense of freedom. Ultimately, the strong and capable side of democracy is to protect the freedom of the people through the rule of law and adult suffrage. The need of the day is for political parties to develop their election manifestos not just as electoral weapons but as documents that fulfill their commitments to the general public.
