Mustang has received its first snowfall of the season. The District Administration Office has stated that snowfall has been occurring in the Muktinath area, including Korlanaka and Lomanthang rural municipalities of Upper Mustang, since this morning.
According to Chief District Officer Bishnu Prasad Bhusal, snowfall has occurred along with rain in the highlands of Upper Mustang and Lower Mustang, including Lomanthang-2 Chhosar, Korlanaka and Muktinath areas.
Similarly, Muktinath Development Committee employee Rabin Subedi informed that there has been snowfall in the Muktinath area. Since the snow has been falling continuously in Muktinath since morning, there has been a problem for the devotees reaching the temple. 'The Muktinath area is experiencing heavy snowfall, with five to six inches of snow,' he said. 'It has not been able to freeze because the ground is hot, if there is any snowfall at this rate, the snow will freeze up to two feet.'
According to Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality Chairman Lopsang Chomphel Bista, snowfall is occurring in the highlands of Loghekar Damodarkunda and partial snowfall has occurred along with rain near the settlement. 'This year, snow fell in Kartik itself, it had not been snowing here for two-three years,' he said, 'Snowfall is a very good thing for farmers, it significantly contributes to the production of crops planted by farmers.'
Similarly, Ward Chairman Pramesh Gurung informed that thick snow also fell in high-altitude villages such as Khinga, Jhong, Chengur, and Phalyak in the Baragung Mukti Kshetra. The cold has increased with the snowfall, affecting local life.
Ward Chairman Gurung said that the snowfall in Kartik this season has benefited crops including apples. The ward chairman said that the snow will prove to be a boon for farmers during the winter season as it irrigates the inner layer of cultivable land.
Administration's request not to travel to Muktinath
The District Administration Office has requested not to travel from Kagbeni in Baragung Mukti Kshetra-4 in Mustang to Muktinath. The request has been made to the pilgrims visiting Muktinath, citing the risk of road accidents due to heavy snowfall on the road.
Due to heavy snow on the narrow and winding blacktop road from Kagbeni to Muktinath along the Jomsom-Muktinath road section, the request has been made to refrain from traveling to Muktinath by vehicle, informed Deputy Superintendent of Police Tshiring Kippa Lama of the District Police Office. He said that due to heavy snow on the roads of Kagberi, Khinga, Jharkot and other places on the Kagbeni-Muktinath road section, the request has been made to refrain from traveling by vehicle.
