The meeting of the Council of Ministers has decided to declare Madhesh province as a disaster prone area. On the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Wednesday decided to declare the entire Madhesh province as a disaster-prone area.
According to Water and Sanitation Minister Pradeep Yadav, the decision to declare all 8 districts of Madhesh province as disaster-prone areas was made by the Council of Ministers. Due to the lack of rainfall in the districts of Madhesh province, the irrigation system has also been affected by the lack of ground water. This decision has been taken because the underground water and water sources have dried up and there is an extreme shortage of drinking water and irrigation water for the general public,' he said.
Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, 2074, Section 14, Sub-Section 2 (D), there is a provision to recommend to the Government of Nepal if there is a situation in which a disaster-affected area needs to be declared a disaster area.
The Madhesh state government decided to make a recommendation to the federal government to declare a crisis zone on Tuesday. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, it is necessary to publish a notice in the Nepal Gazette and declare the area as a disaster-prone area for three months from the date of publication of the notice.
In Madhesh province, which is considered the capital of paddy, even in the first week of July, significant planting has not been done. Till Sunday in Madhesh, even half of the paddy growing area has not been planted.
Madhesh was the most planted out of the seven provinces, according to the Center for Crop Development and Agricultural Biodiversity Conservation. According to the center, dry paddy is planted on 372 thousand 645 hectares in Madhesh. But till July 4, only 174 thousand 508 hectares i.e. 46.83 percent have been planted.
According to the Center's data, planting has almost doubled in the same period last year. 80.6 percent planting was done till June 6, 2081. The main reason for not planting rice in Madhesh is the lack of irrigation.
Madhesh Province Cabinet meeting held on June 26 has also declared the province drought-stricken. The province has been declared drought-stricken after no rain even during planting.
