Shivsharan Maharjan of Dangol's closest competitor, Maoist, got 4,555 votes. Similarly, CPN-UML candidate Surendra Manandhar got 4,337 votes.

Earlier, the by-election was held in Kirtipur after Rajkumar Nakarmi, the mayor elected by the Congress in the 2079 election, passed away on July 10 due to kidney disease. For the first time, UML had a 'clean sweep' in Kirtipur municipality, which is the stronghold of the leftists.

In Kirtipur, which became a municipality in the year 2054, a Congress activist was elected as the mayor for the first time. Not only the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Kirtipur, but also 9 out of 10 Ward President Congress candidates were victorious.

Similarly, Congress's Ichcha Kumar Maharjan and Rajendra Baniyan won in Kirtipur-1 and Kirtipur-4 in the by-elections held on Sunday.
