What you should know

UML has nominated District President Pitambar Bhusal as its candidate for the House of Representatives elections to be held on Falgun 21.

Bhusal, who was elected as the chairman of Bangi VDC at the age of 25 in 2054 BS, is contesting the MP election for the first time in 28 years.

He has been a village, area, regional, and district member of UML and has become the district chairman. This is his second term as the unopposed district chairman both times.

This is the first time that UML has won the elections alone in all the constituencies of Arghakhanchi in the 2079 House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly elections. In 2056, UML-National Janamorcha alliance led by Dr. Dilliraj Khanal of UML won from the then Constituency 2 and in 2070, Dr. Duman Singh Thapa from the same constituency. Both defeated their rival Pushpa Bhusal Gautam of the Congress.  Thapa, who moved to Madhav Nepal after the UML split, passed away two years ago.  Khanal, an economist, is far from party politics.

In the 2074 elections, when the UML-Maoist alliance was formed, the current Lumbini Province Government Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya was elected to Province Assembly 1 and Ramji Prasad Ghimire to Province Assembly 2. After the dissolution of the NCP formed after the party merger between the UML and the Maoists, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, who had won the elections from the Maoists in 2064, 2070, and 2074, left Pushpa Kamal Dahal and went to KP Sharma Oli. In the 2079 elections, the same Rayamajhi was elected to the House of Representatives, Acharya was elected from Province Assembly 1 and Ghimire from Province Assembly 2.

Oli had specially honored UML Chairman Bhusal by organizing a program in Kathmandu, saying that he played a role in helping the UML win all three constituencies by defeating the candidates of the five-party alliance including the Congress-Maoist.

Bhusal, who started his political journey while studying at Adarsh Mavi Khandaha in 2041 BS, became a member of the UML District Committee in 2054 BS and is active in social work.

This time, five names were recommended from the district, including Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, for the candidacy. The UML Lumbini Province Committee had added the name of Gopal Khanal. Rayamajhi has been in detention for two years for investigation in the Bhutanese refugee case. Bhusal became a candidate after Chief Minister Acharya decided not to contest the election.
