The main border crossings of Koshi Province with India will be closed for 3 days starting Monday midnight, targeting the House of Representatives elections to be held on Falgun 21.
The administration has decided to tighten the border keeping in mind the security sensitivity and the silence period.
According to security sources in Koshi Province, the Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Ilamak border crossings will be completely closed from 12 midnight on Monday, Falgun 21 to 12 midnight on Thursday, Falgun 21.
Movement will be restricted until the elections are completed. The administration has decided to stop the movement of citizens of both countries across the border during the silence period.
According to the administration, the Kakadbhitta and Bhadrapur border crossings of Jhapa, Pashupatinagar in Ilam, Jogbani in Morang and Bhantabari in Sunsari will remain completely closed. Daily movement and small and large business activities through these checkpoints will be temporarily affected.
Customs services will also be affected during the election period. All four customs offices will remain completely closed for two days.
Customs services will be suspended due to the Holi festival celebrated in Tarai-Madhesh on Falgun 19 and the election on Falgun 21.
Jhapa Police Chief SP Basundhara Khadka said that security agencies have adopted high alert along with the closure of the border checkpoints. 'Special surveillance, patrolling and checking have been tightened in the border areas to conduct the elections in a peaceful, fair and fear-free environment,' she said.
