He passed the vocal test of Radio Nepal by singing a song about land reform and recorded his first song ”Kharbariko Chheu” in 2022.
In the year 2022, when the police arrived at the house saying that the king had called, many thoughts came to Lal Bahadur Gandharva's mind. When the police came with the news that the then King Mahendra had invited the Gandharvas who could play sarangi to the court, some of them ran away in fear.
But 5 people including Lal Bahadur from Gorkha decided to go to the king. Lal Bahadur was chosen among 30 Gandharvas who were invited from all over the country.
Lal Bahadur told many stories from the past when he met at his house in Bhimsen Thapa Rural Municipality-1 Gyampesal in the last week of November. He said, 'We trained for three months, I was in the final selection along with Jhalakman (Gandharva).'
His musical journey started after he joined Radio Nepal through Dharmaraj Thapa by singing a song about land reform in front of Mahendra.

He used to hum this song when he was selected for Radio Nepal. "There was no motor vehicle, at that time I reached Kathmandu on foot, I got selected by singing a song about land reform," he used to say, "When I was working in Radio Nepal, my salary was 300." He did not work at Radio Nepal for a long time. He got a job in the army after playing the trident and singing to the tune of sarangi.
"I didn't work at Radio Nepal for 5 years, when I reached Trishuli market in 2027 and sang sarangi tunes, the army chief liked it, I got a job in the army," he recalled. He also served in the army for only 2 years. In 2030, when he returned to his hometown, Gyampesal, he stayed here. Villages of Gorkhas, Pakha Dule, reciting sarangi tunes.
At that time, Lal Bahadur, who recorded 9 songs in Radio Nepal, spent his life enjoying the music of sarangi. 1990 Earthquake, Prithvi Narayan Shah's Karkha on Nepal Unification, Danfe Chari's Life, Jung Bahadur Rana's British Trip, World War, Girl Asking Song, Gorakhnath's Mangal etc. made him famous nationally. Last year, when the national artist came to visit him at home, his happiness was visible on his face. In 2076, 'Lal Bahadur Gandharva Sarangi Evening' was also held at Pragya Academy in Kathmandu.
The same folk singer Lal Bahadur, who joined Radio Nepal with Jhalakman, died on Thursday at the age of 79. He had recently suffered from intestinal problems and had also lost his eyesight for 2 years. Although he was physically very weak, he did not stop playing the sarangi and humming songs. He often hummed Dharmaraj Thapa's song 'Hamro Tenzing Sherpale Chadyo Himal Chuchura'. Born on Baisakh 14, 2002, he started playing the sarangi from the age of 9 by picking his father's coin. His fiddle fascination remained the same till old age.
He recorded the song 'Kharbariko Chheu' for the first time on June 22, 2022. He has 9 sons and 1 daughter. He used to worry about who would continue this profession after his Sheikh. "He did not stop playing the sarangi until he could," said local Bhimsen Kazi Baniyan, "He had to take the sarangi at least once a day and hum a song."
