At least 24 people were killed in an attack by terrorists on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India. A senior police officer told AFP that this incident was the biggest attack on civilians in the past few years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the barbaric attack on tourists as a 'brutal incident' and promised to take strict action against the culprits.
Pahalgam is about 90 km from Srinagar, which is a popular tourist destination. According to police sources, 24 people have been confirmed dead so far, but this number is expected to increase. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, in the ongoing insurgency in the Kashmir region since 1989, the militants are in favor of independence from India or union with Pakistan.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that the attack is the biggest incident against civilians in recent years. Soon after the incident, Home Minister Amit Shah has left for that direction. The injured are being treated at the hospital in Anantnag.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called this incident "heartbreaking" and demanded that the federal government take responsibility.
The government has been promoting Kashmir as a tourist center in recent years. In the year 2024, about 3.5 million tourists visited Kashmir.
India has been accusing Pakistan of supporting such attacks, while Pakistan has been saying that it only supports Kashmir's right to self-determination. Earlier, 40 security personnel were killed in the Pulwama attack in 2019. 36 Indian citizens were killed in the attack in 2000.
