Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was born on this day (June 21) in 1953. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Bhutto studied at Harvard and Oxford universities.
Benazir was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1996. She is the only female Prime Minister of Pakistan. Benazir spent eight years in exile in Dubai and London after leaving the post of Prime Minister due to corruption charges.
Bhutto returned to Pakistan on October 18, 2007 to prepare for the 2008 general elections in Pakistan. Benazir was shot on December 27 during an election rally in Rawalpindi. After that, a suicide bomb was also exploded. 24 people including Benazir were killed in that attack.
Benazir's father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was the President of Pakistan from 1971 to 1973 and the Prime Minister from 1973 to 1977. The then army chief, General Zia-ul-Haq, deposed Zulfikar in a military coup in July 1977. Zulfiqar was subsequently arrested and sentenced to death in March 1978 in a controversial case. Zulfikar was hanged on April 4, 1979 in Rawalpindi.
