On this day (June 17) in 1982, Leopoldo Galtieri resigned as president and military chief of Argentina. Born on July 15, 1926, Gaultieri headed the military junta from 1979 to 1982.
On April 2, 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands (a British colony), and war broke out between the two countries. The day after the Argentinian army invaded the Falkland Islands, Britain sent in troops and launched a counter-offensive.
Argentina attacked the Falkland Islands, taking advantage of the political and economic crisis in Britain. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher decided to go to war against Argentina in the Falklands despite the opposition of her own party leaders.
Argentina surrendered to British forces on June 14, 1982 after a 74-day war. The Falklands War ended with Britain's victory. During the war, 649 Argentine soldiers, 255 British soldiers and three locals were killed. Gaultieri died on January 12, 2003.
