On this day (May 24) in 1986, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher visited Israel. Thatcher is the first British Prime Minister to visit Israel. Thatcher was welcomed by members of the Cabinet, including Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
During the visit, the two sides discussed peace process, anti-terrorism plan, trade and other issues. Thatcher was elected Prime Minister from the Conservative Party on May 3, 1979 and ruled Britain for about 11 years. She is the first female head of government in Europe.
Born in 1925 in Grantham, England, Thatcher became an MP in 1959. She became Minister of Education and Science in 1970. She first became Prime Minister in 1979 and was elected for a second term in 1983. In 1987, she became the Prime Minister for the third term after improving the economy of the country in crisis.
She resigned as Prime Minister in November 1990 after John Major was elected Parliamentary Leader. Thatcher died on 8 April 2013, aged 87.
