On this day (May 6) in 1994, the tunnel connecting Britain and France was opened. The tunnel named 'Channel Tunnel' was inaugurated by the British Queen Elizabeth II and the French President François Mitterrand.
The route from Folkestone in UK to Clais in Northern France is 50.46 km long. Of that, 37.8 km is under the sea. It is the longest tunnel built under the sea. About 10 million passengers travel between Britain and France annually through the trains operating on this route.
Although the tunnel was intended to carry cars and buses, currently only trains run through it for safety reasons. A speed limit of 160 kmph is prescribed for trains running on the route. Based on that, it takes around 35 minutes to get from Folkestone to Clyce.
