Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died on this day (April 8) in 2013. Thatcher is the first female head of government of a European country. Thatcher, who became Prime Minister on May 3, 1979, ruled Britain for about 11 years.
Born in Grantham, England in 1925, Thatcher was elected as an MP in 1959. Thatcher, who became Minister for Education and Science in 1970, became leader of the Conservative Party in February 1975. After that, she took a clear stance on privatization of national industries and resources and national interests.
In 1978/79, Thatcher became Prime Minister after then-Prime Minister James Callaghan's government collapsed due to workers' strikes demanding pay rises. She was elected Prime Minister for a second term in 1983. In 1987, she became the Prime Minister for the third term. In 1990, she resigned as Prime Minister after John Major was elected in the party's parliamentary leader contest.
