Amid the special convention called by Congress general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma, the power struggle within the party has begun to surface. Its impact is becoming clear from the district to the ward level.

The latest wave within the Achham Congress, which has long been considered a strong hold of President Sher Bahadur Deuba's group, has started to be discussed as the internal politics of the Congress has entered a new phase. About 50 percent of the representatives of Achham are in favor of a special general convention.

Achham Congress, which has always been dominated by the Deuba group from the district convention to the general committee and the selection of general convention representatives, has seen a split this time. In the past conventions in Achham, there was competition between the two teams of the Deuba group. This time, even Deuba's old charioteers in the district have started leaving.

Bharat Kumar Swar, former district president and general committee member of Congress Achham, has said that his long-standing political collaboration with President Deuba has ended. Swar said that he is no longer in favor of Deuba but in favor of a special general convention of the Congress. He claimed that 16 out of 26 general convention representatives from Achham constituency number 1 are in favor of a special general convention. ‘Eighteen people had signed in favor of the special general convention. It seems that two will be absent,’ he said, ‘Many friends have reached Kathmandu. Some are on their way.’

According to Swar, he had been actively involved in politics since 2033 BS, considering Deuba as his leader. ‘I have supported Deuba for almost five decades. I have spent the fertile time of my political life to strengthen that leadership,’ Swar said, ‘We should have continued to respect Deuba, but the process of ignoring Deuba continued. Finally, I reached a point of change.’

Recalling that there was a close relationship between the leadership and the cadres when Deuba was the Home Minister in 2048 BS, Swar said that access to the cadres was easy at that time. After that, he said that the situation has gradually changed. ‘The distance between the leadership and the cadres is increasing, the voice and access of the cadres have long ceased to reach the center. Dissatisfaction has increased due to this distance.’ Finally, we have decided to leave the Deuba line,' he said. He said that he is not in favor of a particular individual, but is in favor of a special general convention with the aim of reforming the party and strengthening internal democracy.

General convention representative Padma Raj Adhikari said that out of the 26 general convention representatives in Achham constituency number 2, 11 have openly supported the special general convention so far. '19 people had signed in favor of the special general convention. In the meantime, some have withdrawn. Now 10 people are openly traveling to Kathmandu. Some friends may be added,' he said. Although he has been supporting Deuba since 2048 BS, he said that now it is time for a leadership change within the Congress.

General convention representative Bed Prakash Timilsaina, who has been doing Congress politics in the Deuba line for a long time, said that he is traveling to Kathmandu for the special general convention.

He said that the issues of party reform, accountability, transparency and leadership change being raised by General Secretary Gagan Thapa have attracted the delegates. He believes that even though Thapa is a central leader, he is creating an image of a leader who understands the problems of the local level. ‘New leadership is needed to strengthen the Congress. Gagan Thapa is the right person for that. Thapa’s leadership is necessary not only for the party but also for the country,’ he said.
