Last year, 11 youths died outside the stadium during RCB's title journey. For this reason, both teams observed a minute's silence before the opening match and 11 seats were kept vacant. Both teams played wearing black armbands.

Last year, RCB defeated Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad to win the IPL for the first time. The next day, 11 RCB fans lost their lives and more than 50 were injured in a stampede during the parade.

All RCB players practiced wearing jersey number 11 before the match. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had started the match without any fanfare in memory of the deceased. After last year's incident, the BCCI had banned the Chinnaswamy Stadium from hosting matches. The stadium was only recently given permission to host matches after security assurances.
