He was, just 13 years old. But now he has become a millionaire. The thing is, cricket player Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He is considered a future big star. During the 'Mega-Auction' of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, his discussion suddenly started.
There was competition between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals to buy him in the auction. In the end, Rajasthan managed to buy Vaibhav for 11 million rupees. In this way, he is going to be the biggest, richest and most popular franchise cricket league player in world cricket. He was only 13 years 243 days old when he was auctioned.
This is the teenage years. And he is, from Bihar. He was the first such name to be auctioned, making him the youngest in the IPL's 16-year history.
There must be something to the glory, because Rajasthan's coach is Rahul Dravid. He has also managed the Indian cricket team. He is said to have an uncanny ability to find and identify new players. Maybe, there is a high possibility, it was Dravid who insisted on buying Vaibhav.
Bihar's Ranji team coach is Pramod Kumar. He is also considered as the coach of Vaibhav. The coach has given very sweet feedback about his students. He said, "Vaibhav is such a player, who has come to earth to play cricket and will return after playing cricket." He does not go anywhere below that. According to the same coach, Vaibhav is always eager to learn something. They don't take any time to learn again.
It is not now that Rajasthan has followed Vaibhav. Some time ago, Rajasthan ran a high-performance center in Nagpur. It was there that he took the Ekkha exam, in which he performed exceptionally well.
Rajasthan CEO Jacques Luc McCram says, “He has exceptional talent, and equally limitless potential. He will still have to work hard to catapult himself to the upper echelons of the IPL. We are happy to welcome him.'' Vaibhav's talk started after he scored 104 off 62 balls for India U-19 against Australia in the September match this year.
His century was completed in 58 balls. He was 13 years and 188 days old when he achieved this feat. Vaibhav, who hails from Samashtipur in Vihar, has also played in the Ranji Trophy and was 12 years 284 days old when he made his debut.
What is more interesting is that his father Sanjeev Suryavanshi is a general farmer by profession, and also a part-time journalist. He has been selling the land to raise his son's cricket career.
One question remains, will Vaibhav really get to play in the IPL? According to the Indian media, the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules require a minimum age of 15 to play high-level cricket. The 2020 rules also allow special requests to be made to the ICC, in exceptional circumstances, to allow players under that age to play.
A player from Pakistan, Hasan Raja. He played 7 Tests and 16 ODIs, between 1996 and 2005. He was 14 years 227 days when he made his Test debut. This is the record for playing international cricket at such a young age. There is no age limit to play IPL. So now it will depend on the decision of Rajasthan. Meanwhile, a star cricketer has also been born in the name of Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
