Rastriya Prajatantra Party's Sasmit Pokharel has been elected from Kathmandu-5, defeating Congress General Secretary Pradeep Poudel and UML's former Senior Vice President Ishwor Pokharel. He received 30,737 votes. His nearest rival, Congress's Pradeep Poudel, received 9,159 votes, and UML's Ishwor Pokharel received 4,701 votes, according to the Returning Officer's Office. Former RPP leader Kamal Thapa was also in the fray from this constituency.
Sasmit was known among the younger generation for his style of clearly expressing his understanding and views on politics on social media. This same Sasmit has now taken a step into the parliamentary journey. Born in Kathmandu-5 on 1 Falgun 2052, Sasmit won the election from the same constituency where he was born.
Sasmit, who graduated from Kathmandu University in law, had completed his studies up to Plus Two in the United States. He is currently pursuing his master's degree at Tribhuvan University. Sasmit has also worked as an intern in Parliament.
His political journey began with Bibeksheel Sajha and he was active in Ujwal Thapa's election campaign in the 2074 BS elections. Due to this background of study, Sasmit is clear about the political system and parliamentary tradition. He used to share this understanding in his dialogues with voters.

Pokharel, who became the leader of the Sajha Youth Organization and a member of the Central Committee of Bibeksheel Sajha in the early days, is currently the central member and co-spokesperson of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In the local elections held in 2079 BS, Sasmit Balen Shah was actively involved in the campaign to win the mayoralty of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
In 2079 BS, he ran as an independent candidate for the post of Kathmandu-5(A) Provincial Assembly member. At that time, he suffered a defeat. After that, Pokharel worked as an assistant expert in education and urban planning in Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
During the election campaign, Sasmit talked about sustainable development in his constituency, improvement in the living standards of citizens, and the vision of a future with equal opportunities for all. He put forward his main priorities to the voters, such as promoting good governance and transparency, as well as encouraging economic development, improving the quality of education and health services, and effectively taking the voice of the people to parliament.
The 29-year-old is also a person who has worked in the forefront of social issues such as Dr. Govinda KC's Satyagraha and the Guthi movement.
Sasmit's friend Saroj Gautam, who is involved in Sasmit's election campaign, says that Sasmit's victory in Constituency No. 5 has brought positive changes. He says, "We are very happy that Sasmit won by beating all five heavyweight candidates," he said, "He is a young man who understands the law, is clear on policy matters, and is able to understand the voice of the street."
Gautam says that he has been actively involved in various programs and movements in Kathmandu for a long time. He says, "He is a young man who has been involved in the movement for the benefit of the country for 10 years. Now we are confident that he will do good for the country."
