Despite several rounds of talks between the special general convention supporters and the establishment faction, the Nepali Congress could not unite. After the establishment faction took disciplinary action, the special general convention supporters announced a new central working committee on Wednesday midnight.
The Thapa faction has already reached the Election Commission to update the details of the new central working committee elected from the special general convention on Thursday. Couldn't you keep the Congress together?
The saddest part is that we wanted to turn the inauguration ceremony itself into an opportunity to spread the message of unity. Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma had instructed everyone to turn it into a unity ceremony. We speakers had emphasized on promoting unity within the party.
Even while the special general convention was being held, we had kept the door open for talks and dialogue. While the talks were going on, there was a possibility of agreement, but suddenly they (the Deuba faction) decided to expel the general secretaries and the joint general secretaries from the party. After that, we had no choice.
Despite the possibility of unity, the majority of the party members were told that there was no place for them in the party. Therefore, we were forced to take a decision according to the agenda of the special general convention and moved forward with the leadership selection process.
Why could the Deuba faction not agree to your proposal?
Democracy is not an arrogant system. Arrogance is forbidden here, it is a humble system. Coexistence is an integral mantra of democracy. But the party was affected by some selfish elements who denied coexistence and wanted to run the party on their own terms. The saddest thing is that the elderly party president, who had contributed to the party for more than 60 years, was also affected by it. We thought that he was determined to keep the party united. But the party president could not keep everything under control. We are saddened by that.
Which is the official Congress now?
The general convention is the highest body of the party. As per the party's statute, we have called a special general convention, in which the majority of party representatives participated. The guidelines of the supreme body must be followed by the Central Working Committee, and the party members must follow them. There is no doubt that the Election Commission will give us authority.
How do you go to the election with a divided Congress?
We will go to the election with new leadership. We will move forward with high confidence as per the decision of the special general convention. We have given a new dimension to politics within the party, we have given new life to the party.
We will move forward in the direction of making the lives of the Nepali people easy and pleasant, protecting the country and democracy and enhancing the country's international reputation by making the party a favorite of the people and taking the country to the place the people want it to be.
