Special general convention may lead to leadership change: Gururaj Ghimire

What you should know

Nepali Congress leader Gururaj Ghimire, who is in favor of a special general convention, has said that the special general convention, which is being held at Bhrikuti Mandap since Sunday, could lead to a change in leadership.

In a detailed conversation with Kantipur, he also said that there is no justification for a gathering without a change in leadership. He said, "I have repeatedly said that the central committee can call a gathering of district chairmen, and discussions can be held to formulate a date. The central committee itself is sufficient to formulate policies. But a general convention is needed to change the leadership, and even the general committee cannot. This special general convention has been called to discuss and decide on policy issues, statutes and structural changes, including a leadership change." Stating that although a special general convention is called according to Article 17 (2) of the statute, it is like a regular general convention, Ghimire said that it can do all the work that a regular general convention does. He said in clear words, "It will not only elect the leadership, but also the entire central working committee (in all clusters)." He also informed that the leadership selection process could go on until December 29.

Ghimire also said that the special general convention can make some special decisions. He said that the special general convention can make arrangements to prevent the same person from remaining in the leadership for a long time and to prevent the Prime Minister from becoming the Prime Minister for the third time after taking oath twice. He said, ‘There is a loud voice within the party that the same person should not be given opportunities repeatedly. We will address that.’

He also took a dig at those opposing the special general convention. He said, ‘Those who have been running the party and the country for 36 years, who are now talking big things in the context of our special general convention, have already lost their ground. They have no right to talk big things.’
