Decisive talks are scheduled to be held today between Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) President Ravi Lamichhane and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra (Balen) Shah.
Leaders from both sides are working on a blueprint for an agreement. A leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) told Kantipur that preparations are underway to finalize the agreement on Friday afternoon after the agreement is finalized.
‘So far, the talks are aimed at an agreement. The negotiation committee formed by our party is preparing points on what points will be agreed upon,’ the leader said. ‘After that, we are preparing to talk to friends including Kumar Ben and Asim Shah on behalf of the mayor and reach a decision.’
The leader said that if an agreement is reached, there will be talks between Ravi and Balen. Balen has also tried to reach a unanimous agreement, saying that Kulman Ghising of the Ujjaya Nepal Party is also on his side. According to the leaders, the agreement that is currently being reached will also determine who will become the Prime Minister after the election, party priorities, ticket distribution, proportional list, and other issues. ‘Before Ravi and Balen sit down, the second-tier leaders will finalize all the issues,’ said a source close to Balen.
RSP President Lamichhane had discussed cooperation with Balen from 7 pm to 1 am on Monday. After RSP leaders proposed that Balen could be made the prime minister, there was no clear proposal from Lamichhane. Later, after reaching Chitwan, Lamichhane denied it, saying that the discussions had not reached that stage.
After that, Balen started discussions to take the Desh Bikas Party, whose election symbol is the stick, forward under his leadership. Balen had a political meeting at the house of his friend Kumar Ben in Jwagal, Lalitpur, from Wednesday afternoon to late Thursday. On Wednesday, he met doctor Bhagwan Koirala, Congress leaders Chandra Bhandari, Sunil Sharma, Janmat Party Chairman CK Raut, Nagarik Unmukti Party patron Resham Chaudhary to RPP leader Gyanendra Shahi.
Balen had met separately with former secretary Bhim Upadhyay, former president of Bibeksheel Sajha Party Milan Pandey, former MP elected to Bagmati Province Assembly from Bibeksheel Ramesh Paudyal, former president of Bibeksheel's youth organization Saroj Gautam, who did not merge with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, activist Sagar Dhakal, media entrepreneur Sambhav Sirohiya, businessman Sachin Dhakal, Gen-G activist duo Raksha Bam and KP Khanal, artist Nischal Basnet, media persons Suraj Singh Thakuri and Rishi Dhamala, among others, saying that he was trying to move forward through a new party and sought their suggestions.
During those meetings, he had sought suggestions saying that he was trying to move forward through a new party. At the same time, he also said that he was preparing a list for proportional representation.
After Balen started his political homework, Ravi reached Jwagal on Thursday and met him again. After that, the second-ranked leaders of both sides gathered for discussions to bring Balen and Ravi together.
