After the inauguration on Saturday in Sallaghari, Bhaktapur, the closed session of the 11th General Convention of the UML began on Sunday inside the Bhrikutimandap. UML leaders and cadres, including representatives from all over the country, were campaigning at the convention venue. Their various styles of campaigning were visible.
Some were seen shouting slogans, some were seen wooing voters by telling their issues despite the cold. Some candidates' supporters were busy walking around with umbrellas and T-shirts with promotional materials attached to their photos, while others were busy carrying flexes and cutouts and distributing pamphlets. To make the election atmosphere more colorful, some candidates had brought panchebaja to the convention venue.
Sushila Adhikari, treasurer of the Chinari Naumati Baja group, who came from Chandragiri in Kathmandu, said that her group of 11 people had come to campaign for Santosh Khadka, a candidate for the post of special provincial member of the capital, after receiving remuneration. With the dress code and campaign style according to the geography, Bhrikutimandap was not just a political program venue, but also a musical program.
The visiting cards and promotional materials of the candidates were scattered all over the road. Political gossip was going on while eating almonds, oranges, tea and snacks. Some representatives were also seen making good use of their free time and shopping inside the Bhrikutimandap. There are coffee shops, almond and orange shops outside the polling station, so it is convenient to eat them while basking in the sun.
Representative Durga Koirala from Bara said that it is easier to vote through the machine by looking at the person's photo and name. According to her, voting in this way makes the election effective as invalid votes are zero.
Hari Acharya, who came from Chitwan to campaign for his party's candidate and increase his enthusiasm, says that such activities of representatives and supporters will strengthen democracy. 'Even if this one-day campaign style does not have much impact on voters in the election environment, it will increase brotherhood and intimacy,' Acharya said, 'It has also become a means of knowing and letting people know who is on your side.' One or two days of propaganda will not have much effect on those who work for the people and the party.’
During the campaign, those who tried to win votes by distributing leaflets with different names of candidates from the same group were also seen active. The leaflets prepared by cutting out the name of the official candidate and putting the name of another candidate were distributed to the delegates going to vote. As a photo and TikTok zone was made inside the Bhrikutimandap, some delegates were seen enjoying themselves there too.
Security arrangements in the area were also tightened due to the general convention. Delegates, candidates and volunteers were allowed entry only after a strict security check at the main gate of the Bhrikutimandap. Once inside the gate, one could reach the polling station only after passing another security check. Vehicle movement was banned on the exhibition route to prevent crowding.
