According to a study conducted by Sprout Social Index in 2025, 89 percent of Gen-G social media users are on Instagram, 84 percent are on YouTube, and 82 percent are on TikTok. This makes these platforms the most popular for Gen-G. Gen-G uses social media for entertainment, connecting with friends, and family.

In the current environment, social media is becoming a daily activity for Gen-G. They are constantly posting their photos and thoughts, along with their lifestyle. According to the Pew Research Center, most teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 are constantly online. However, is this daily activity healthy?

The generation born between 1997 and 2012 (Gen-G) is considered an important and influential generation in the digital world. Since more than 75 percent of Gen-G users spend more than two hours a day on social media platforms, it is necessary to understand their online activities and preferences.

Gen-G has grown up with some kind of technology. Be it a video camera or a cell phone or a tablet. This generation is closer to social media than other generations.

Social media is becoming more dangerous for Gen-G as it is becoming increasingly unsafe among its users. Due to the constant use of social media, various people have to face problems in aspects such as mental and physical health, self-esteem, and academic achievement. Many studies have shown that excessive social media use is associated with an increased risk of depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts.

Gen-G is known for its technological sophistication, as they grew up in an era where the internet and smartphones were ubiquitous. They tend to prioritize visual content found and seen online. This is especially true for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. They use social media not only to stay connected with friends and family, but also for self-expression, entertainment, and to stay informed about the world around them.

When they spend time on social media, they rarely engage in family and community activities. This disrupts the process of learning family and social values. They cannot establish close relationships with other people, including family members. Due to this, this generation has an increased sense of fear and insecurity. They do not receive proper guidance, advice, and counseling in a timely manner.

As a result, they are likely to fall prey to bad habits, behaviors, and associations. Due to being extremely active on social media, family members have very little direct interaction with relatives and friends. Due to which they are not aware of the situation, problems and needs of others. They are not able to share the work and experiences they have experienced throughout the day with their family members. Due to which even family members are unaware of the good and bad activities of their own children.

The current generation is living in a state of fear due to threats from various people, both known and unknown, through social media platforms. Due to various temptations or false assurances and love, they are involved in sexual activities and later on, due to 'blackmail' based on that, they are exposed to financial, mental and sexual exploitation.

Today, social media is becoming the platform of choice for hackers and other criminals who engage in anti-social activities. Since there is a large amount of data in the form of information about a person's date of birth, place of residence, place of work, business, family and other personal activities, once a social media is hacked, such data reaches hackers.

The impact of social media is also pervasive at the societal level. Looking at the positive aspects, many social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook are now effectively broadcasting health and hygiene, children's education, consumer awareness and other important social issues. This has helped create awareness in the society, especially among teenagers and youth. On the contrary, people are also facing negative emotions. Therefore, proper legal arrangements are needed to ensure safety.

The use of social media by this generation can create awareness at the societal level in areas such as public and political commitment, privacy and communal security. They debate and raise their voices on social media against the injustices, superstitions and corruption and irregularities seen in the political structure in the society. Which plays a role in holding the concerned bodies accountable.

Understanding the social media habits of Gen-G is not only about knowing which platforms they use. It is also about identifying their impact on the digital landscape. Research is also needed to understand how they are affected and affected by aspects such as their goals, feelings, and ethics.

There is also an understanding that social media only wastes people's time. But it has also given some people the opportunity to earn. With its help, many are earning a good income from home. Some are earning from their skills and some from their talents. They are earning money from home by becoming online teachers, freelance writers, voice-over artists, typists, or translators.

Social media, which is said to connect those who are far away but separate those who are close, can cause great damage to our lives if it is not used properly. While using social media, users should give high priority to privacy. They should protect their identity. Otherwise, someone else can misuse our personal data.

Social media is just a medium. It is up to the user to use it or misuse it. Technology and networks are not only taking over the global society, but are also robbing us of our time. Since Gen-G is the one who uses it the most, it has played various roles in their lives directly and indirectly. Misusing the internet can lead to great losses. If used properly, it can make our lives simpler, easier, and faster.
