The government has launched the 'Election Police Cyber Cell' targeting the elections. The cell has been activated to monitor and control activities that spread rumors, disseminate misinformation, and influence the elections through social media and digital media.
On Tuesday, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Home Secretary Rajkumar Shrestha and Spokesperson Anand Kafle informed that an election-focused cyber police cell has been brought into operation. According to them, arrangements have been made to monitor, regulate and control suspicious activities seen on digital media through the cell in coordination with the Election Commission.
The cyber cell will identify rumors, misleading information and election-focused improper activities seen on social media and online platforms and inform the Election Commission if there is any complaint. After that, the commission will investigate and if the false or misleading content is confirmed, it will use its technological tools to remove the content and if any offense is found, it will take action according to the law.
Spokesperson Kafle said that the activities of spreading rumors and misinformation are kept under close surveillance through district police offices across the country. He said that the cyber cell has been activated as the main challenge at present is to prevent the misuse of digital media to maintain the integrity, fairness and credibility of the election.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that a cyber cell has been launched with the aim of controlling misinformation on social media, preventing content that misleads voters, and making the election process safe through coordination between the police and the Election Commission.
