Simara still in turmoil: Youth Association's Arvind Sah and two ward chairmen of UML arrested

What you should know

Simara has been in turmoil for two days following a tense situation that erupted on Wednesday between protesters and UML workers who were protesting against UML leaders who were about to attend a wake-up call. On the second day, Thursday, the police fired six tear gas shells and two rounds of air fire after they had a hard time controlling the protesters.

The police arrested two UML ward chairmen accused of being involved in the beating, but the protests did not stop. As the situation became tense, the administration imposed a curfew from 1:45 pm to 8 pm. However, violent protests have been held in defiance of the curfew.

After learning that UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and leader Mahesh Basnet would be arriving via Simara Airport on Wednesday to address the UML Youth Awareness Campaign meeting in Parwanipur, Gen-G and others protested against it, leading to a clash with UML cadres. Six protesters were injured in the process.

Gen-G and others gathered at Simara Chowk from 10:30 am on Thursday, demanding the arrest of the UML cadres who had beaten them. In the Jitpur-Simara sub-metropolitan city, Dhan Bahadur Shrestha, the elected ward 2 chairperson of UML, and Kaimudin Ansari, the ward 6 chairperson, were arrested by the police after they came to meet the police at the Simara Area Police Office. Samrat Upadhyay, the Bara coordinator of Gen-G, had filed a complaint against the two of them and six others on charges of assault.

Therefore, the police took both of them into custody. Even though the police informed them that the two ward chairmen had been arrested, the protest did not stop. The protesters, armed with bamboo sticks and sticks, started burning tires on the streets and inciting the movement. The protest continued on the streets demanding that four people, including Arbind Shah and Arif Khan, be arrested.

As the protest turned violent, the police deployed to control it were forced to retreat. When they were attacked, the police fired six tear gas shells and two rounds of air fire. When the police could not stay at the protest site, the Bara district administration issued a curfew order from 1:45 pm to 8 pm. However, the protesters continued to block the Birgunj-Pathlaiya highway by defying the curfew. Meanwhile, a large number of security personnel deployed at the airport also clashed with the protesters.

District administration officials had repeatedly spoken to Gen-G's Bara coordinator Upadhyay over the phone, asking him to stop the demonstration and come for dialogue. Administration officials had urged him to come for dialogue, promising to arrest more accused persons. After the administration's proposal was found positive, the protesters stopped the demonstration on the highway from 4:30 pm. Discussions took place on the road between Gen-G and the protesters regarding the administration's proposal. They have come to the conclusion that if Arbind Shah and Arif Khan are also arrested, they will attend the discussion with the administration on Friday.

'We are in coordination with Gen-G's district coordinator Samrat Upadhyay to avoid damage and reach an agreement. Even though we waited until the evening, they did not come,' said Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra. ‘We called them for talks after a meeting of the District Security Committee,’ says Assistant Chief District Officer Chhabiraman Bhattarai, ‘Maybe they will come on Friday.’

Gen-G District Coordinator Upadhyay says that the protest will continue until six people are arrested according to the Kitani complaint. Gen-G Jitpur-Simara Municipal Committee spokesperson Manish Sapkota says that they will not talk until the arrest of Arbind Sah and Arif Khan, a Bhakku from Simara, a youth association close to UML. ‘We will not go to talks until the main person who beat us is arrested,’ he said. ‘If we are arrested, we will probably go to talks after 10 am on Friday. We have stopped the protest since 4:30 pm on Thursday.’

Meanwhile, Assistant Chief District Officer Bhattarai has said that Arbind Sah of the youth association was arrested from Kathmandu on Thursday evening.
