Simara Airport has been closed after a clash broke out between activists and the Gen-G group who had gathered to welcome the UML leader.
According to Simara Airport Chief Bishnu Prasad Adhikari, UML leaders Shankar Pokharel and Mahesh Basnet were scheduled to land in Simara at 11 am on Buddha Air flight number 553.
The Civil Aviation Office of Simara closed the airport after a clash broke out between UML workers and the Gen-G group who had gathered near the canteen at the main entrance gate of the airport to welcome the two leaders, the official said.
‘The security situation here has deteriorated after the two groups hurled bottles. Now that the decision to close Simara Airport has been made, no flights have come from Kathmandu. I have heard that the flights of both leaders to Simara have also been canceled,’ the airport chief told Kantipur from Simara.
Buddha Air operates 10 two-way flights to Simara daily. Around 700 passengers travel from there to Kathmandu, Birgunj and Simara daily.
