Ganesh Bam was planning to return home from Bhaktapur after the birth of his second child in the coming Kattik. However, on the morning of October 12, a landslide brought disaster to the family of 25-year-old Bam of Sannitriveni rural municipality-5 Sakezjula.

23-year-old wife Damila Kumari Shahi, 2-year-old daughter Priya Bam and 14-year-old sister-in-law Manisha were buried in the same grave when a landslide fell in his tin-roofed house near Suryavinayak-6 Magargaon in Bhaktapur.

Bom, who was raising a family by renting land in the corner of Suryavinayak, rearing cows and growing vegetables in a tin-roofed shed, lost 3 members of his family in one day. His wife, daughter and sister-in-law, who were cooking in the kitchen while he went out to sell milk, died on the spot. He said it happened.

'I had gone to sell milk to cows,' Ganesh said about the incident, 'an avalanche came and fell down the hill and crushed all three of them.' He said that around 8 am, while cooking in the kitchen, a landslide fell from the house and everyone died. His sister-in-law Manisha was studying in class 8.

Wife Damila was 9 months pregnant. As the doctor gave a date for the baby to be born next month, she planned to return home with a new member on Tihar instead of going home on Dasai. However, due to the disaster on Saturday, his hope of returning home was incomplete.

Two years ago, after his wife became pregnant, his family left Kalikot and entered the capital to give birth to a safe child. His father-in-law Man Bahadur Shahi, who has a house in Khadachakra Municipality-6 of Kalikot in Bhaktapur, was making a living by rearing cows and cultivating vegetables on rented land for 4 years.

After coming from home, Ganesha's family also came to the in-laws and took shelter. After his mother-in-law passed away last February, his distraught father-in-law Man Bahadur went to India, leaving Ganesh in charge of taking care of his daughter-in-law at home. Six of the six brothers lived with Ganesh in Bhaktapur, including his sister-in-law Sowan Shahi, sister-in-law Manisha, younger brother Nirmal and his family of three.

Since school and college were holidays on Saturday, brother Nirmal and sister-in-law Sowan went to a friend's house. That is why he was saved from the landslide. 'There was always a fear of landslides in Kalikot,' Ganesh's brother Nirmal said, 'Even when he came to the capital, he had to lose his relatives.' Along with his studies, he was staying in Bhaktapur to help his brother-in-law in housework.

When he returned home after selling milk, after seeing the house destroyed by the landslide, Ganesh, who panicked and informed his neighbors, told that it took half an hour for the police to arrive at the scene. After the arrival of the police, the body was removed and the scene was cleared, but the post-mortem could not be done on Saturday.  After the post-mortem on Sunday, his two brothers and mother-in-law arrived in Bhaktapur from India, and the cremation will be done tomorrow morning.

'Ganesh is still alive,' he said. He told that Ganesha's family is planning to go to the village to celebrate Tihar after two years in Kattik. After hearing the news that 3 members of the family fell in a landslide in Bhaktapur, his village Sakezjula is in mourning.

45,000 support for cremation

45,000 has been collected as support for the cremation of the family members of Ganesh Bam of Sannitriveni-5 Sakezula, who died in a landslide in Bhaktapur. Sanni Triveni village here contributed 30,000 rupees and 45,000 rupees were collected with the help of branch chiefs and employees including the president Mohanwahadur KC, vice president Parvati Singh Sanjyal, chief administrative officer Premwahadur Baduwal, and 15,000 rupees.

The amount collected has been handed over to Ganesh's brother Rajendra on Sunday.
