Kathmandu Valley has experienced the heaviest rain since 54 years on Saturday. The record has been broken so far in rain measuring stations at different 9 locations. The Department of Water and Meteorology has stated that since the beginning of rain measurement in Kathmandu, the most rainfall has been measured so far.
The government through the department started to keep records of rainfall since 1970 . Meteorologist Govind Jha informed that the record of the department recorded the highest rainfall since 54 years in Kathmandu on Saturday.
In 2002, Kathmandu had the biggest rainfall. But after 22 years, a new record was made on Friday and Saturday with more heavy rains.
According to the record at 8:45 am on Saturday morning, 239.7 mm of rain has been measured in 24 hours at the Tribhuvan Airport Rain Measuring Center in Kathmandu. Whereas in 2002, only 177 mm of rain fell. Meteorologist Jha said that this data from the Airport Rain Measuring Center has seen the highest rainfall so far.
'Such heavy rainfall has never been recorded in Kathmandu valley before,' says meteorologist Jha, 'This is the heaviest rainfall ever since weather records were started . It remains to be studied carefully. But I think this is the first time that it has rained regularly and so much here for 24 hours.'
According to him, there was a record of 159 millimeters of rain in 2007 at the Budhanilkanth rain measuring station. 187.3 mm of rain fell on Saturday . Similarly, Chapagaon in Lalitpur received 200.5 mm of rain in 24 hours in 2002 and 323 mm of rain fell on Saturday.
Meteorologist Jha said that there was a record break in 9 rain measuring centers in the valley and there was excessive rain in many places outside the valley. 'Collecting data . Analysis is also being done . There has been heavy rain in other places too,' he said, adding that there may be more revelations in its detailed report.
The heavy rain that started in Kathmandu from Friday morning stopped only after Saturday afternoon. Due to the heavy rains, the rivers in the valley have taken the form of floods and the cities and roads around the rivers have become submerged.
On Friday, rainfall was recorded at 222 rain gauge stations in the country. Among them, excessive rainfall has been measured at 77 places on Saturday . More than 200 mm of rain has fallen in those places . According to the department, incidents such as flooding, landslides and road washouts have occurred in places with excessive rainfall.
'Rain has stopped in Kathmandu valley now. But it doesn't mean that it won't rain anymore,' said meteorologist Jha, 'Now it will gradually improve . And the weather will improve mainly from Sunday. Even now, it is raining heavily in some places of Kosi and Madhesh.'
So far 34 people have died in the valley alone due to heavy rains, while 66 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides across the country till Saturday evening. 79 people are still missing.
According to Nepal Police, 11 people died in Kathmandu, 5 in Bhaktapur and 18 in Lalitpur, 5 in Panchthar, 2 in Dhankuta, 2 in Solukhumbu, 1 in Sunsari, 14 in Kavre, 1 in Dhading, 4 in Sindhupalchok, 3 in Dolakha.
Similarly, 15 in Lalitpur, 26 in Kavre, 6 in Kathmandu, 7 in Makwanpur, 3 in Dolkha, 4 in Jhapa, 5 in Panchthar, 5 in Sindhupalchok and 79 people including other districts are missing.
