On this day (June 5) in 1959, Lee Kuan Yew became the Prime Minister of Singapore. Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee ruled until November 28, 1990.
Born on September 16, 1923, Lee is known as the Father of the Singaporean Nation. Lee founded the People's Action Party (PAP) in 1954.
He was the General Secretary of the PAP from 1954 to 1992. He was elected MP from Tanjong Pagar constituency in the general election held the following year. Since then he was continuously elected Member of Parliament until his death in 2015. With the PAP winning the election in 1959, Lee became Prime Minister.
As Prime Minister, Lee declared Singapore independent from British rule on August 31, 1961 and joined the new Federation of Malaysia. In 1965, Lee announced the separation of Singapore from Malaysia after political disputes between Lee's PAP and Malaysia's ruling party escalated with the racial riots of 1964. He passed away on March 23, 2015.
