The Maoist armed conflict was raging, incidents of attacks on police stations, military camps and government offices were repeating on a daily basis. Continuing the campaign, the Maoists attacked the police station at Gopetar in Panchthar on 10th January 2058. In that sequence, 5 policemen and 7 Maoist soldiers were killed.
13 people from the Maoist side were injured. The Maoists decided to take their wounded soldiers to a safe place by dragging them from Tehrathum through Gufapokhri to Sankhuwasabha and taking them to a safe place for treatment.
The team carrying the injured reached Hrivaku in neighboring Tehrathum on January 14. The injured was carried on a bamboo stretcher. A stretcher was broken as it approached the herd . The injured were kept in the house of Pasang Sherpa and Indra Sherpa of Bagale village and arrangements were made for treatment.
The unharmed leaders and activists handed over the wounded to the local committee of the Maoists and went elsewhere. 17 people including 13 wounded and 4 health workers were kept in Pasang. But at that time, the wounded and health workers kept in Pasang's house were eating, Pasang's house was surrounded by the Royal Nepali Army and fired indiscriminately. Local residents are still shocked when they remember the incident that happened in Bagale.
In that attack, 20 people were injured on the spot, including 17 Maoists and three local residents, including 17 Maoist workers who were being treated for injuries in the Gopetar incident. Tulsi Vishwakarma, a local who fled to save his life, was caught and shot by the army.
Maoist's Koshi state chairman Hark Bahadur Nemwang, who participated in the attack on the Gopetar police station while holding the command of the Maoist army at that time, remembers that the main factor in the Bagale massacre was the breaking of the stretcher after carrying the injured from Gopetar to Bagale village. "After giving the party's local committee the responsibility of treating the wounded, we headed towards Taplejung, the army that came after getting the information surrounded the house and opened fire," said Nemwang.
According to Nemwang, after eating in Bagale village, there was a plan to change the broken stretcher and take it to the jungle through the cave pool and take it to the forest for treatment. "After the stretcher was broken, it became difficult to carry the wounded, if it had not been broken, the team would have moved forward, there was no possibility of meeting the army," he said, "not even one of the comrades who were being treated for the wounded had a weapon. That's why everyone got injured.'
Maoist central member Durga Prasad Chapagai, who is currently a member of the Koshi state assembly, and 40 people were in the house of neighbor Indra Sherpa. On the other hand, Indra managed to escape because there were many workers in the organization committee, party district committee and local committee.
"The army started shooting at the house of Pasang who was injured, we managed to escape and save our lives," said Chapagai. Local Kul Bahadur Gurung, an eyewitness of the incident, said that the army fired so many casualties that the next morning (January 15th) called everyone in the village and dug a hole and buried the bodies.
'After the death of a person, the army that came to the house at night to gather at dawn. Gurung recalled, "When we came in the morning, we saw people falling all over the place. They were attacked while they were eating." Some of the dead had fistfuls of green rice in their hands, while others had the same thing put in their mouths. After the people of the whole village gathered and buried them, the army started on its way.' ; After 23 years of the incident, the park built at that place has been named 'Bagale Shahid Smriti Park'. The park was inaugurated by the Chairman of Maoist and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Sunday 14th of January. During the opening of the park, Maoist's Koshi state president Nemwang, central member Chapagai and Atharai rural municipality vice president Baliraj Ingnam gave an illustration to Dahal.
The government has declared 21 people who lost their lives in the Bagale scandal as martyrs after the establishment of peace. Speaking after the inauguration of the park, Dahal commented that the Bagale murder case was the biggest and collective accident of the conflict period from the point of view of human loss. Dahal honored the family members of those who lost their lives in the Baga incident as well as those who lost their lives in incidents that took place at different places during the conflict. During the ceremony, the family members of the martyrs complained to Dahal that the party and the state could not realize the dreams of the martyrs.
