As the road division office did not bring enough hume pipe, the diversion work in the Hewa river of Mechi highway has become uncertain.
After Beli Bridge was swept away by the flood that occurred on October 12, diversion construction was started to temporarily connect the broken road network to Panchthar and Taplejung across Hewa. When only a small number of hume pipes are coming, four-wheeled vehicles will not be able to cross the Hewa river for a few days.
After the bridge collapsed, the disaster management committee and the all-party meeting sitting at the district administration office, Panchthar, decided to divert the Hewa river and arrange the environment to deliver the essential items including food grains to Taplejung before December.
The team led by Pawan Bhattarai, head of road division Ilam, estimated the cost of 16 hume pipes with a diameter of 1 meter and 20 cm for diversion and brought the materials accordingly.
Panchthar chief district officer Bishnu Prasad Koirala said that after the hume pipe arrived in Hewa river on Saturday afternoon, the work started on Sunday morning, but since 16 pipes were not delivered, the duration of the diversion construction will be extended.
"The plan was to restart the four-wheeler from Friday evening after the work was completed, but it was not successful," Prajia Koirala said.
It is said that 20 more hume pipes will be required in the construction of the diversion . Bipin Dhungana, Engineer of Road Division, Ilam, informed that the pipe is being brought from Itahari and after its arrival, the diversion construction work will resume.
After the bridge collapsed, the Nepalese army has constructed a bridge over the Hewa River. People and motorcycles are coming from the same gap.
