Heavy snowfall has occurred in Upper Dolpa, located in the northern part of Dolpa. The snowfall began on Monday night and nine inches of snow have accumulated so far, said Pemma Dhorche Gurung, vice-chairman of Dolpobuddha Rural Municipality.
‘It is still snowing, the villages and the hills are covered in snow,’ said Vice President Gurung. ‘In previous years, it used to snow in Kartik, and now it snows at the same time. When it is snowing, it is not very cold, but when it stops and the sun shines, it becomes very cold.’
Vice President Gurung said that tourists have also been stranded in the villages after heavy snowfall in Dolpobuddha, She-Phoksundo and Charkatangsong rural municipalities in Upper Dolpa.
Internal roads have also been closed after the snowfall. He said that the snowfall has made life difficult for people as the locals of Upper Dolpa have not collected firewood for the cold.
Domestic and foreign tourists who come to visit Phoksundo Lake have also been affected after the weather changed and the cold increased since Monday afternoon. The Shey-Phoksundo National Park has reported that telephone service has been disrupted in the Phoksundo Lake area after solar panels stopped working due to the extreme cold following the snowfall.
