On this day (April 7) in 1970, the famous Hollywood actor John Wayne was awarded an Oscar for his role in the movie True Grit directed by Henry Hathaway.
Wayne, who created a distinct identity due to his acting, worked in more than 150 films. Wayne's acting in the films of famous directors John Ford and Howard Hawks in the 40s and 60s made him a distinct name in Bollywood.
Wayne, who was first nominated for an Oscar in 1949 for Sands of Iwo Jima, had to wait 21 years to receive the award. The Alamo (1960), directed and starring Wayne himself, was nominated for Best Cinematography.
Wayne's last film was The Suitist released in 1976. This great Hollywood actor died on June 11, 1979 at the age of 72.
