The instrument of the Gandharva community, the sarangi has now become universal. Recently, Kiran Nepali from Kirtipur, Kathmandu has been working as a 'brand ambassador' to spread the tune of sarangi in the country and abroad.
Born in Kirtipur Nayabazar, he belongs to Kutumb, a leading band promoting Nepali original music. You-we can see Kiran playing the sarangi while watching the Kutumb band performance. Kiran is not only playing sarangi but also doing teaching and branding.
Sarangi Prem has not left Kiran, who became a guitarist until 2008. He said, "I have brought the melody of sarangi, a sad instrument that is difficult for people to see and touch," he said. He said that he considered the sarangi as a broken instrument and decided to make it a brand. As soon as he wakes up in the morning, Kiran looks at the sarangi named Bhrikuti, Tara, Dhwani, Punte, Fuchche, Stuti etc. decorated in his room. He starts the day with the sarangi which is his ornament. He said that he spends regular 18 hours in Sarangi Sadhana. Kiran's musical practice of making himself happy and making others happy is now on the rise.
Every morning from 6:30 am, he takes an online class on sarangi. After 9:30 p.m., they leave for the office called Project Sarangi in Sanepa. They are busy teaching, playing and making new types of sarangi all day long. Kiran said that if the sarangi could be modified, everyone would play this instrument. So they are making sarangi under different names by running sarangi industry. "We have also made an electric sarangi," he said. He said that more than 2,000 people have learned so far.

He said that sharing the same stage with instrumentalists from 16 different countries and playing the sarangi made Kiran more fond of this instrument. He said that he collected many unprecedented memories related to sarangi. "I will never forget the moment when a child who has been disabled for many years moved his finger while playing the sarangi in Scotland," he said. He told me that he filled the sarangi tune for the song. In 2014, he also had a solo sarangi evening in the UK.
He was 23 when he started playing sarangi in 2008. From the same year, he joined the family through a concert. After that, it became easy to introduce Sarangi and spread its tunes all over the world, he said. "The family's goal is to introduce Nepali folk tunes to the world," he said. Those fiddles are being sold in the country and abroad. He said that more than 200 students in America are playing the Nepali brand sarangi. "After being modified, people's view of sarangi has changed," he said, "I am trying to connect its traditional musical style with western music theory to make sarangi contemporary and 'total'."
